Evaluation Question 7

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Software

Photoshop

I have learnt from photoshop that it was very useful to use when constructing my front page and contents page, the task was made a lot easier because of the range of tools available. I particularlly found the use of a different layer for every picture, shape or text because this meant i could move individual parts of the magazine around until it looked neat and in order. Photoshop benefited the production of the magazine as i have used it regularly in the past giving me knowledge to what each tool can do, this meant i could use my abilities to make it look more professional overall as if it were a real magazine on sale in shops.

I learnt from using In Design that it is a very good programme to use when constructing the double page spread particularlly because of the tool which allows you to shape the article around the picture i had in the mddle of my page, i found this very useful as it saved creating different text boxes around the image and i could alter the article at any time and wouldnt have to worry about the image in the middle. The benefits of using In Design on my double age spread is thatit again made it look like a profesional magazine and also meant it matched with the front cover and contents page.

Blogger

I found blogger very useful because it allowed me to display all my work regarding the magazine in order which i couod go back to for example i could look at my audience research post and read over what the audience wants in my magazine then go back and include it. Also in my blog is my flat plan ideas which i could go back to to remember the layout to my magazine. Blogger benefited the production of my magazine because it meant i was more organised and knew what i was doing.

Hardware

iMac Computer

I found using a mac computer very useful because it provided me with all the software and interbet access i needed to maje my magazine to the best of my ability. I particularlly found useful the large screen compared to a normal comuter because it meant i could have more than one programme open at once and drag things across yet still have a clear screen to work on.

Proffesional camera

Using a proffesional camera was important in the production of my magazine beacause it made it look more proffesional wheras if i used a normal digital canera the quality would not be as good and you would be able to tell that the magazine was not real and proffesional.

Evaluation Question 5- How did i attract/address my audience?

As you can see from the comparison between my front cover and NME's is that the positioning and pose of the models is very similar and the positioning of the main sell line is similar both being just below the models faces. There is also a quote from the interview underneath the main sell line on both magazines, both being in an itallic like font. Both front covers follow the basic tructure with there being a skyline at the to of the page, sell lines at the sides and a barcode in the bottom left corner. The costume the models are wearing are also similar both being dark, leathery type outfits.
Final front cover (left)

What the audience wanted:
A colour suited to the genre of the magazine
-Sell lines which make you want to read the full article
-A good, catchy title which has meaning behind it
-A contents which is easy to understand and has a simple layout
-Needs to appeal to both boys and girls
-Models need to be appropriatley dressed to show the indie genre
-A quote on the double page spread would be good
-Make the double page spread consistent to the rest of the magazine

I made some stylistic changes to the design of my magazine inlight of my initial primary research in order for my product to appeal to its intended audience.
In my rough cut design of my magazine the colour scheme was mainly blue with some red which after thinking about, wasn't really suited to the "indie" genre of my magazine. To fix this issue i changed the colour scheme to yellow and black, these being bright, vibrant colours which suit the indie genre much more because blue and red are colours that would suit a magazine for a younger age group.

Rough cut: front cover

Also some advice which i listened to from my primary audience research was to make my sell lines more short and to the point to make the reader want to read that article, i also spaced mysell lines out more because in the rough cut they were to congested.
Because the people who conducted my primary audience research were making comments about a Q magazine, they thought the title was to short and had no meaning behind it, so i thought i'd make my title relevant to the genre of music and longer than a single word.
Through my primary audience research i also found out that peopel like a good, simple contents that they can understand, not a fancy one with wiords all over the place. Knowing this i set my contents out in a very simple order, with the articles and page numbers down the left and a couple of pictures.
Another thing i found out through my audience research is that the magazine needs to appeal to both boys and girls, this is partly why i chose the colour yellow, because it is quite feminine and will appeal to girls aswell as boys. It is important for my magazine to appeal to girls and boys because if it was real, more people would buy it meaning more profit.
Mypeers also said during my audience research that they think the models should be dressed fitiinglyto the indie genre menaing leather jackets, maybe longish hair for the boys and i got the idea for the guitar on the double page spread from this, because a lot of my magazine audience will play the guitar or be interested in it.
Another suggestion i have taken in to account whilst making my double page spread was to include a quote in large writing above the article on my double page spread, i followed this advice and in my opinion it makes the page look  alot better and when the audience is flicking throught the pages they might see an interesting quote and think "this artist looks interesting, i want to read on".
I also feel its imoprtant after my research that making the whole magazine consistent for example colours, theme, style is very important because my magazine has to give the same cool, vibe throughout so i stuck to the yellow and black on all the pages.

I conducted some final audience feedback with my target audience and this is what they had to say:

1. What draws your attention to the product?
On the front cover the colour of yellow attracts me first because it really stands out as it is a very vibrant colour. On the double page spread the thing that i see notice straight away is the modles pose, because it is unusual and he is pointing to his tshirt it make me want to see what word he is pointing at.

2.What genre is it and how do you know?
The genre of this magazine seems to me like alternative music becaus ehte title is very indoe and the guitar on the double page spread cements this further.

3. What do you consider the strengths of this product?
The strengths are teh colour scheme of black nad yellow becaus eit reallly fits the mood of the magazine.

4.What social groups does it represent and how?
It represents indie people i think mainly becaus eof the clothing they wear.

5. Would you purchase the product and why?
Yes because the colour, fonts and images are very interseting and attractive and they make me want to read the rest of the magazine, also the sell lines grab your attention and get me excited about the article it s about.

How would you improve the product?
I would make sure the double page spread is black and yellow like the title and contents pages to make the magazine look more consistent and so it has a theme and i would also ,aybe of included more sell lines on thye front page and more articles with page numbers on the contents page.

Evaluation Question 4

Evaluation Question 3

Evaluation Question 2

How did I represent social groups?

What social groups are represented in my product
In my magazine the social groups which are represented are indie people who like alternative music such as bands like Kasabian, The Vaccines, Two Door Cinema Club, The Black Keys or Kings of Leon. However this social group will also like mainstream music in the charts yet they still appeal to the mainstream and succeed in the charts.

How would you define them
I would define the people who would read my magazine as people who like alternative music and mainstream chart music and go to watch their favourite bands at gigs and festivals. This social group would wear basic clothes like jeans and a hoody or a sweatshirt from shops such as Topman or River Island, for footwear they would wear trainers or plimpsles. Much of the social group will watch popular TV shows on channels such as BBC 1 and ITV. Much of the male audience will also be interested in football and watch it on Sky Sports.

How did i represent them
As you can see from my magazine (below) I have used various methods to represent the social group of indie or alternative. Firstly the clothing my models are wearing all fit the genre of the magazine with the two models on the front cover are wearing dark leather jackets, the models on the contents page are wearing jeans and a hoody/ sweatshirt and their hair is styled appropriatly to the indie genre. I also represent the social group through the fonts and colours I use for example yellow and black is very suited to the genre because it is a dark cool colour which both boys and girls will like. Lastly the image of a guitar in the middle of the article shows what music genre this social group like.

Evaluation Question 1

Question 1- What ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Front cover
My front cover (left) is quite similar to those of actual music magazines NME and Q. The layout of my magazine is very similar to NME’s as I borrowed conventional methods such as the models are the same shot distance away from the camera and there are two models. The main sell line is also positioned in the same place just under the face of the two models. The quote under the main sell line on both my magazine and NME’s are in the same font and the sell lines look similar.

Masthead
The mast head of my magazine has been used in the same way as Q magazines’ as the title is positioned in front of the model hiding some of him/her. In contrast the title of NME Magazine is positioned behind the model and therefore some of it is hidden. My mast head is similar to NME’s as well though as they both have skylines.

Mise en Scene
The mise en scene is important to my magazine because it shows what the genre of my magazine is. For example the brick wall in the background of my contents picture shows that these artists are urban and come from a similar background to the readers. Other images in my magazine were taken In a studio, this was to give it a polished feel for a up close and personal interview.

Music genre and how my magazine suggests it
My magazine suggests its indie genre in many different ways including the models looks and costume because of the blank expressions and leathery dark clothes, the type of font because it is black and yellow and it is chosen carefully to match the genre of the magazine. But most of all it is the actual content that gives way the genre of the magazine as the bands mentioned are all bands that the indie genre would be interested in.

Layout
My magazine follows the conventional methods of existing magazines with a main sell line in the middle of the front page with sell lines either side of it. The contents page also has a basic layout as all the main articles and page numbers are listed down the left hand side with the main picture on the right. This applies to the double page spread as well with a picture covering the whole left side of the page and the article on the right with a small picture in the middle.

Contents page
My contents page follows the basic layout of every contents page because I found from my research that my audience prefer a basic contents page that is very easy to read and understand instead of a fancy over the top one which is overcrowded.

Costume and props
On the front cover of my magazine the two models are wearing leather jackets which helps show off the genre of the magazine which is indie or alternative. Similar to this is the NME and Q magazines as these models are also wearing dark clothing with Cheryl Cole wearing leather. The model on my contents is also wearing suitable clothing matched to my magazine with a white pullover and jeans giving a laid back, casual look.

People
The people modeling for my magazine are suitable because they have the correct look for the magazine for example hairstyle, clothing and make up for the girls. I told my models to purposefully not smile in the pictures to give off a moody vibe.

Title font and style
The font for the title of my magazine is suitable for the genre of my magazine because it looks gritty as if it was part of a wall. The wall also relates to my contents picture with the wall in the background. I used a different font for the exclamation mark from the rest of the title to make it stand out more as it is the unique part in my title.

Written content
I have written the interview so the artist being interviewed speaks slang so that the young readers of the magazine can relate with him., the interview covers the way in which the artist rose to fame, how he is dealing with his new fame, his aspirations and his upcoming album and single. This compares in many ways such as the layout to the article taken from Q magazine

MY finished article

My article

Bursting on to the scene, Jay Cooper!

“A lot of people compare me to Ed Sheeran which I take as a compliment but I like to think of my self as my own individual artist with a different sound”. These are the words of  England’s hottest new artist tipped for great things in the years to come by top critics. Jay Cooper, comes across as a confident young man who is passionate about his music even at the young age of 21. “Hey Jay how’s it going?” “ I’m great man, I’m having the time of my life at the minute and just savouring every second”. “great, how are you coping with your knew found fame”? “y’know the fame has many positives for example I’m much more well off now and being from a poor background I’ve been able to help my family by getting my mam a new house, but on the other hand it’s harder to go about your business when going out in public as I’m getting recognised more and more now”. “And do you like the travelling aspect of being in the music industry” “ Yeah I like to get about and see the world and spread my music around for more people to hear but it can also be very draining hopping on and off air planes constantly and staying in hotel rooms y’know. “yeah, ok lets go back to the start of your career in music, how did you get your big break?” Well I used to be very interested in playing my guitar and singing so I started uploading videos of myself on to facebook and youtube, soon they became very popular and the view count was rising all the time, eventually I was spotted by Ryan Willis, head of Sony records who offered me a recording contract at the age of 19”. “which artists influenced your style and who inspired you to do what you have done?” “In the early days I listened to a lot of Oasis infact the first song I learned on guitar was “Wonderwall”, I also loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a lot of their songs feature in my early videos
“And since you got the record contract what have you been busy doing?” “Well I quit my old job as a call centre worker which I hated and hit the studio to begin work on my first album” “The album “Living in Sound” is released next week are you excited and what can we expect from the album?” Yeah you know I’m very proud of the work done on the album and I know it will reach out to a great range of people because they’ll be able to relate to the things I sing about as I’ve put a lot of thought into my lyrics  and I just know my existing fans will love the album but I ‘m also looking to expand my fan base with this album. “The single from the album ‘Rising Up” was released 2 weeks ago and congratulations you got the number one spot” “ Thanks man” “How do you feel about it” “ I’m just so overwhelmed and grateful for the the fans who bought the single because it’s very fulfilling feeling that all the hard work in the studio has paid off, I just wanna take this opportunity to say thanks to the fans I really appreciate it and look forward to making more music for you to love and enjoy” “Thanks Jay its been a pleasure speaking to you, good look with the album and we at “The Pick hope you have a successful career in music”.

Recce

A recce is a pre-photography visit to a location. In a recce we evaluate wether a location is suitable for a shoot, i will need to discuss access to the location and assessment of potential.

Potential locations- Description- College studio: Access is very easy as its actual purpose is to take pictures in and there are various lighting equipment so my image will look professional. I will not be disturbed in the studio so i will be able to concentrate and get the best picture possible.
Additional comments/observations-

Potential locations- Description- brick wall: Access is easy, legal and not in the way of any building sites. The lighting is good as it is in the sun light and it is not a busy place so no members of the public will be disturbed.
Additional comments/observations- The brick wall represents that the band are quite streetwise and remember their roots.

Article Planning

My article
My article is about alternative and rock artists, in the interview i will ask the band a range of questions regarding this particular artists rise in to the music industry and his debut album.

Style
i intend to use second person narittive as i think it involves the reader more throughout the article, i will use language that the reader can relate to to give the magazine an informal feel. I have found out through my research how magazines such as Q communicate with the reader to make it feel as though they are talking to them and are on the same wavelength. Most of the article is mainly made up of speech from the interview but manages to inform the reader lots of interesting things about the artist.

Beginning
i intend to start my article with speech coming from the artist, this way the reader is familiar with the artistand understand where he is coming from straight away.

Extra Information
At the bottom of the page i will include the bands website address and facebook and twitter advertisemnets to thier page.

Analysing Images

He has a very blank facial expression and he is stood with his hands in his pockets leaning against a wall which suggests he is trying to be cool, moody and laid back like nothing bothers him.
All the people have a happy look on their faces suggesting they are a fun band and don't take things to seriously like the picture above. The two men are in the top third of the image looking very independent for example the blond one has his head tilting up suggesting he is confident and sucessful. The woman is more in the middle of the image looking as though she's hiding behind the man a bit with a shy expression on her face.

Because of this research i will now consider how far up the page the models are positioned to show importance, for example all of these artists are positioned in the top third of the page which presents their importance, now i will consider this and position my artists in the top third of the page. I will also consider the facial expressions of my artists now and put more thought into what looks they need to have to show their personality and the body language they use to show how they are feeling and their attitude i.e. being cool, fun, moody etc. I have realised how important propsand clothing are and will now think what do i neede to dress my artist in to give them the correct look to match my magazine type and theme. I will ask my artist to where plain indie clothes to show the genre of music.

Peer assessment of flat plan and ideas

Peer assessment
My peers said the the title is very good and has a good indie feel to it and they recognised the metaphor behind the title straight away. Another positive comment that my peers made was that the contents page looked very well laid out, clear and easy to read. They said it will allow them to navigate around the magazine with ease and find an article that interests them quickly. My peers also said that the genre of the magazine is easily recognisable because of the colour and the vibe the magazine gives. I also received positive reviews on my double page spread with people liking the positioning of the models and saying the article is also well laid out and will be easy to read.

Improvements
Some improvements my peers suggested was that i could space the sell lines on my front cover out more because some said that my magazine front cover looked to basic because all the sell lines are in the same place and too squashed together in one place. Another point my peer made was that the the models on the front cover could be positioned better and have different facial expressions instead of blank to show the band members individual personalities. I have took these suggestions and board and will work on improving in these areas.

Monday 30 January 2012

Flat Plan

The front cover of my magazine will feature three models posing as band members. The lead singer of the band will be in the centre of the three with his body and head facing the camera, he will be slightly further forward than the other two because he is more important and more well known. The guitarist and drummer models will be positioned further back with their bodies facing away from the camera but head turned towards the camera. The magazine is called "The Pick" as pick relates to what you play a guitar with and guitars feature in the music this magazines specialise in. It's also caused "The Pick" because it offers you the pick of the best music. The title will go in the top right of the page so buyers are attracted to it when looking for a magazine to buy. The front cover will have a skyline and a space atthe bottom where extra information will go. The colour theme of the magazine is blue as you can see the title is coloured blue; this is because the magaziner is mainly aimed at a male audience and blue is a boyish colour.

The contents is very simple and laid out well so if the reader is looking for a certain article they can flick straight to it. Down the left sideof the page will be all the main featured articles and there page number. The majority of the contents page is taken up with an image of the lead singer of the band seen on the front cover and a large page number in the top right of the image so readers can see it as it is the main attraction of this weeks issue. Underneath that is a picture of a singer from a different band featured in the magazine. The colour theme of blue will be carried on in the contents page.

The double page spread is an interview with the featured band on the front cover of the magazine. On the right hand page will be another picture of the band taking up the whole page. There will be a extreme close up of the lead singer and behind his two band members one standing with his hands in his pockets and one sitting with his hands together. The background behind the band will be blue to go with the theme of the magazine.
The page onthe left of the double page spread will be filled by the featured article split into three columns, in the centre middle column will be a picture of the bansds logo.

Primary Audience Research

Primary audience research

I have conducted this research to find out what appeals to my target audience and any improvements i could make .

1. What improvements would you make to the magazine?
2. Are the colours suitable for this magazine?
3. Does the front cover make you want to pick up the magazine?
4. What do you think of the layout of the magazine?
5. Are the pages consistent and do they follow a theme?
6. Is the contents page laid out clearly and do you find it useful?
7. Are the models appropriatly dressed to suit the genre of the magazine (pop, indie, rock)?
8. Is the title of the magazine good and effective?
9. Does the main sell line attract you to read that particular article?
10. Do you think the article on the double page spread is laid out well?

Impact on my work

Impact on my own work
Because of the audience research i have done i now know who my target audience is and what i need to include in my magazine which will appeal to my target audience. It has influenced certain aspects of my magazine such as the colour, for example i know that my audience will be young and "happening" which means they will want a fun interesting magazine to read so i will include fun colours that stand out instead of dull, boring colours. My magazine would be read by a large amount of teenagers so i chose the colours carefully so they would appeal to them. The models need to be young and suited to the "alternative" genre of music and dressed correctly for example maybe a leather jacket. Also i have considered the background for my pictures and i thought a brick wall in a street would be suitable as it gives the picture a urban feel and will appeal to a younger audience as most of the teenagers reading will still be living with their parents in a similar street so they can relate to the artist. It also shows that the artist has not forgot where he/she came from, where their roots are which gives hope to aspiring young artists reading. The language of the magazine will be modern using common slang terms which the young audience can relate with for example the word "cool", if i used over complicated words the readers may see this as uncool and lose interest.

Research into potential target audience- secondary

The target audience for my magazine is prodominately male around the ages of between 15-28. Particulary middle class as they would buy it at the local news agents for quite a cheap price between £2.50-£5.00.
My target audience would be interested in mainly alternative, indie or rock music.
Its aimed at people who are interested in going to gigs and festivals and enjoy music on television and radio which is where they access their music mostly, there will be a list of bands tour dates to the reader aware.
My magazine aims to get people to buy music legally by promoting bands new albums interviewing them
The audience for my magazine will be interested in bands such as Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian, Two Door Cinema Club or Foo Fighters. The reader profile for this magazine will be people who enjot listening to music with their friends and are very much in tune with the modern age.

Research into institutions that distribute similar products

http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/Friday 20th January 2012
http://www.mediauk.com/owners/88/bauer-media
http://www.mediauk.com/magazines/starting-with/q

As well as Q magazine Bauer Media also owns various magazines such as Empire, Kerrang, FHM, Heat, Zoo, Golf world and Closer
They also own various radio stations such as The Hits Radio, Kerrang radio, Magic 1170 Teesside and Metro radio

A distributor would publish more than one magazine so they appeal to a wider range of fans as having just one magazine with one music genre will only appeal to the fans of taht specific genre. I think this company will be interested in adding my magazine to their list of titles because magazines such as Q feature mainly popular mainstream music such as Cheryl Cole and already famous bands whereas my magazine will do this whilst concentrating on smaller bands who are just breaking into the industry. In my magazine you will see artists who wouldn't usually feature in Q such as Two Door Cinema Club and The Vaccines.
